In Les Larmes, a novel published in 2016, Pascal Quignard anchors a world composed of memories and legends to the historical reality of the birth of Europe and the French language. In this imaginary world, Charlemagne, Charles the Bald, and his secretary Nithard—the first French-language writer—rub shoulders with fictional characters, sites of metamorphosis. The novel is also a reflection on music and literature, in a text founded on ruptures, similar to that of The Last Kingdom.
