Saisons has long met with disaffection from critics because of the very originality of its composition. The economic, social, and political ideas that Saint-Lambert had previously developed in the Encyclopédie modernize the classical framework of the Horatian and Virgilian pastoral in its pages. This study of the close ties between his economic thought and his poetic inspiration also underlines the tension that characterizes his century, between participation in progress and retrograde temptations.
