The five novels published by Claire de Duras between 1822 and 1824 constitute a sort of mini saga spanning from the eve of the Revolution to 1802, when the monasteries were reopened and the émigrés returned. Against this backdrop of upheaval, she conveys a permanent interplay between fiction and politics—one that is dominated by women. What is interesting here is that politics is always driven by the aristocratic elite, before being enveloped in the fiction of the novel of lost love.
