The metatheatrical repertoire at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries

The metatheatrical process, by which the theater “speaks” about itself and represents itself, invades the stage at the end of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A comprehensive study of this repertoire invites us to renew the attention we pay to the dramatic output of this period. On the one hand, this allows for a refinement of the knowledge that we have of it, and contributions, on the other hand, to a more general reflection on the very notion and customs pertaining to “metatheater” throughout the ages.
