La Peste has been read as a political allegory. Oran represents occupied France, the plague represents Nazism, and the doctors represent the Resistance. But it can also be read as an epidemic novel. After examining the medical and literary sources, we will see how the author represents the disease. The present-day reader will find in the novel what the media have said about COVID-19: the importance of numbers, the dynamics of contagion, and the difficulties containing the disease.
