Ways out of the crisis: What is the history of the novel in the twentieth century? Fiction, narrative, and romanesque

If no essay seems to cover the whole of the twentieth century in a synthesis equivalent to M. Raimond’s Crise du roman, the intersection of works by H. Godard, M. Murat and D. Rabaté offers a more fruitful alternative. With their aid, the history of the genre, considered in terms of the writers who served as guides and theoretical reference points (Céline, Gracq, des Forêts), is redeployed with the additional help of three notions: fiction underneath the novel, the romanesque beyond it, and narrative in its margins.
