In 1852, Gérard de Nerval was invited to recount his memories as a poet in a volume entitled La Bohême galante and in the publication L’Artiste—to help promote the thesis that Arsène Houssaye had created the bohemian artistic and literary culture. Even though he hardly concerned himself with the “combat” that his friend Houssaye was waging, Nerval’s own preoccupations gelled with aspects of the theme of bohemia.
