Hegel claimed to be a Lutheran philosopher. He praised Luther’s historical achievements, his translation of the Bible, and his theological and ethical ideas, from the perspective of spiritual freedom and interiority. Hegel’s encyclopedic thought preserved important elements from Luther and also meditated, like the theologian of Christ, on the mysteries of the Word of the Cross and of kenosis. Nevertheless, Hegel systematically refreshed and rewrote what he borrowed from Luther, and was often closer to Augustine.
