Ernst Lohmeyer and the Jewish and Christian “Idea” of Martyrdom

Ernst Lohmeyer’s 1927 article in the RHPR on the Jewish and Christian « idea » of martyrdom is based on the application of neo-Kantian categories to biblical and parabiblical data. He explains martyrdom according to the metaphysics of both worlds in which the witness is simultaneously the advocate of God on earth, carried and led as he is by the Word, while being also attracted and elevated by God to himself, despite his death which is itself subverted.
