The article presents the developments that have characterized the relationship with the Bible in the history of theology. Two “models” emerge: that of spiritual exegesis in the manner of the Church Fathers, and that of critical exegesis. The article shows that it is no longer possible today to radically oppose these two models. Rather, one has to articulate them accurately; it is an essential condition for reading the Bible to have a structuring function for theology.
