In 1950, the bookseller-publisher Henri Lefèbvre published a rather reprehensible book titled Le Secret de Marcel Proust by a certain Charles Briand. It is based on apparently authentic documents held by one of Proust’s secretaries, which the author claims to have come across in a small book published in London in 1925. This booklet was a hoax, but a number of questions remain concerning why and how the two books were created and the contradictions surrounding this.
