Luc Fraisse, “Le Temps retrouvé, terminus and enigmatic return to the wellsprings of Proust’s work”
Although parts of Le Temps retrouvé were conceived or reworked at different dates, the strength of the work lends them a coherence in hindsight. The sociology of the novel reaches its terminal point, staging a beyond of Proust’s life, and inviting us to wonder if the book that the hero will write is the one that the narrator completes. When at last exposed, the aesthetic philosophy never detaches itself from the novelistic fabric. Even the unexpected had been foreseen.
Keywords: narrator, fictional autobiography, autofiction, sociology, literature and philosophy, dogmatism, philosophical idealism.
Yves-Michel Ergal, « Un diptyque »
Yves-Michel Ergal, “A diptych”
Combray, part one of Du côté de chez Swann, forms a diptych along with “Matinée chez la princesse de Guermantes” from Le Temps retrouvé. We have the beginning and the end of a novel that revolves around “raw material” dealing with the mother, childhood, death, and the Work. In these fragments of À la recherche du temps perdu, what would be the “embryo” of the work to come? And how does this project move towards the end, but always a provisional end?
Keywords: completion, incompletion, death, work, childhood, novel.
Maya Lavault, “The double case of Baron de Charlus and his nephew Saint-Loup, or the ‘Dostoyevskian side’ of the inverts in À la recherche du temps perdu”
Proust, a reader of Dostoyevsky and Stevenson, created the characters in À la recherche du temps perdu as double beings, such as Charlus and Saint-Loup, whose inverted character, like their membership in an ancestral lineage, produces a cleaved personality echoing the medical discourses of the time and creates the principle of a novelistic structure in two stages, appearances then revelations. Thus, the novelistic, hermeneutic, and philosophical dimensions of Recherche are linked.
Keywords: splitting, secret, Dostoyevsky, Stevenson, inversion, heredity, intermittence, recognition.
Stéphane Chaudier, “Useful or useless? The sacrificial ethic in Le Temps retrouvé”
Le Temps retrouvé, the last opus of À la recherche du temps perdu, is also the moment when Proust’s morality is finally discovered, envisaged in its relationship to literary creation, in a tense confrontation with the heroic spirit of sacrifice of the Great War. Is the writer not condemned to pale in comparison to the combatant? Does literature deserve to be practiced for its own sake? Proust defends the autonomy of art and institutes courage as the cardinal virtue of the writer.
Keywords: morality, war, homosexuality, Saint-Loup, art of the novel, style.
Julie André, “Writing in war, writing about war”
As early as 1914, Proust began to take notes on the war and very quickly decided to incorporate it into the novel he was writing. In addition to the social upheavals it entails, he is interested in the different discourses it gives rise to and intends to distance himself from them, in particular those of the press. Thus, the novelistic dimension of 430 the event emerges in the eyes of Proust, who sees it as a “turning point” and makes a proper play out of it in a novel drawn from an aesthetics of reversal.
Keywords: twentieth-century French literature, genetics of texts, novel, war, Le Temps retrouvé.
Mireille Naturel, “Narrative temporality in Le Temps retrouvé”
Published in 1927, the core of Le Temps retrouvé was imagined in 1911. Placed under the sign of incompleteness, it nevertheless concludes with the word “End.” Each of the three parts of the volume gives a specific representation of temporality. A complex temporality: both fragmentary and analogical, creating surprise that leads to the observation of the effects of Time on beings and to the narrator’s discovery of his vocation.
Keywords: time, incompleteness, circularity, figures of speech, aesthetics, history, verbal time, memory, vocation.
Sjef Houppermans, « “Le Temps retrouvé”, mais comment ? »
431Sjef Houppermans, “‘Time regained’ but how?”
While Le Temps retrouvé closes with a series of rather positive propositions, this entire section of À la recherche du temps perdu nevertheless speaks of times that are disrupted, turned upside down, in disarray. The scenes that take place during the war, the episodes with Charlus as well as the “Bal de têtes” are exemplary. The finale is similar to a fairy tale, an extratemporal genre, linked to myths as well as to the unconscious, displaying frightening dimensions, verging on a familiar strangeness.
Keywords: War, Charlus, familiar strangeness, Bal de têtes, unconscious, psychoanalysis, fairy tale.
Stéphanie Fonvielle and Jean-Christophe Pellat, “Soundscapes of À la recherche du temps perdu”
Alongside the domain of music, the sounds of the ordinary world occupy an important place in Recherche, shaping its sound universe. After an inventory of the diversity of sounds of the city or the countryside, we interpret their value when they signal the narrator. In Le Temps retrouvé, beyond their value as signals, some sounds (a spoon banging on a plate, the little bell of Combray) trigger involuntary memory and are associated with other sense impressions.
Keywords: music, sounds, soundscape, memory, sensations, bell.
Edward Bizub, « Double justification.
Edward Bizub, “Double justification. The two sources of the Proustian vocation”
From Jean Starobinski ’ s “double legitimacy” and Héctor Pérez-Rincón ’ s “medical-literary transverberation,” we can shed light on the two sources guaranteeing Proust ’ s vocation and his hero. He evokes the Jewish, maternal side, linked to Ruskin ’ s translations, and the paternal side, connected to the experiences of another self carried out by his father, and to psychotherapy with doctor Paul Sollier based on the bodily sensations that resurrect involuntary memory.
Keywords: Ruskin, translation, the self, Sollier, psychotherapy, vocation, Jewishness, father, Freud, unconscious.
Sophie Duval, “Vocation and Venetian fictions”
The aim here is to shed light on the fictional construction of the theory of involuntary memory and the Venetian motif, which gives rise to the initial reminiscence in Le Temps retrouvé, caused by the paving stones, and which is hidden behind the last one, caused by François le Champi. Finally, we will discover an allusion to the vocation of Saint Paul, which contributes to the structuring of the novel.
Keywords: Baptism of Christ, fiction, François le Champi, intermittences, involuntary memory, paving stones, Ruskin, Saint Paul, Venice, vocation.
Stylization and the poetics of the transfer in Le Temps retrouvé”
This study centers the description of the “ladies with new hats,” which plays a strategic role in Le Temps retrouvé: (a) it perfectly illustrates the process of figural transfer that underlies Proustian poetics; (b) it models it metatextually, through a series of mises en abyme dealing with the theme of détournement; (c) it projects it simultaneously on several different levels of textual organization (thematic, lexical, syntactic, enunciative).
Keywords: Proustian poetics, figural transfer, stylization, semiotic “passages”, interpretative paths, metatextuality, enunciative heterogeneity.
434Jean-Marc Quaranta, “The forest stars. Rewriting and autotextuality in Le Temps retrouvé”
We know the importance afforded to translation and pastiche in Le Temps perdu. The aim here is to explore rewriting beyond these two forms by using the categories of intertextuality identified by Genette to analyze Proust’s autotextual play. Rewriting appears as a way of manifesting the artist’s vision, and it takes forms that are all the more varied since time, along with war, is a powerful agent for rewriting the novelistic universe and the narrative itself.
Keywords: rewriting, summary, continuation, essence, aesthetics, time, war, narrative, reference, allusion.
Béatrice Athias, “The theater of the world in Le Temps retrouvé”
Theater occupies a central role in Le Temps retrouvé: Images linked to the spectacle are articulated with the resumption of a topos of moral philosophy and literature–the theater of the world. Here we study how its deployment participates in the narrative shift of which the last volume is the seat: the decline of a world close to death and unrecognizable to the hero-narrator concomitant with the entrance of the latter. We also try to shed light on its aesthetic and hermeneutic stakes.
Keywords: theatrical novel, masks, baroque, trompe-l ’ oeil, kaleidoscope, look, vanity, philosophy, morality, society.
Mathilde Bertrand, “‘If the age for being a poet has passed’. Lost poetry in Le Temps retrouvé”
Just before receiving the revelation of his vocation, the narrator of Le Temps retrouvé formulates a moving farewell to the poetry of his childhood. During his last social morning call, he experiences the passage of time, which sometimes miraculously returns, but which also destroys, leads to death and oblivion. Among these ruins, he looks for the fragments of an eternal beauty and youth which are perhaps the only true poetry, if “the true paradises are the paradises which one lost.”
Keywords: poetry, prose, verse, novel, time, memory, old age, youth, aristocracy, worldliness.
Isabelle Serça, “Drawing a line over the time or how to finish a sentence–and an oeuvre”
We will offer some remarks on the last sentence of Le Temps retrouvé and, therefore, on Proust’s sentence and, therefore, on time (and on this “embodied time” that is 436memory), according to an aesthetics of punctuation that tries to show how punctuating the sentence means punctuating time.
Keywords: memory, style, punctuation, syntax, literature, mathematics, theoretical physics, Einstein, Damour, Connes .
Guillaume Perrier, “Roland Cailleux’s Le Temps retrouvé”
In 1948, Roland Cailleux, a doctor and friend of André Gide, published a novel with Gallimard entitled Une lecture in which the main character, during a long course of treatment, discovers and reads the whole of À la recherche du temps perdu. The result is a gradual reversal and transformation of his life. The ingredients of Le Temps retrouvé in particular is the subject of much discussion.
Keywords: critical reception, reading, reader, biography, amateurism.
