Kant was the first philosopher to propose a pragmatic definition of the passions by distinguishing it from other affects: what we shall call subjective reason occupies an important place in their functioning and, at the same time, every passion is termed a “disease” since it destroys the faculty to act freely. Proust did not conceive of passions in this way, but he shared the philosopher’s idea that they implicate both desire and reflection.
