The influence of Kant that can be discerned in Proust’s approach to the question of aesthetics goes deeper than mere surface analogies based on his exposure to this philosophy in his education; we can observe a similarity in their approach to the hierarchy of faculties—this is a lesson taken from Kant—and the revelatory nature of artistic activity and associated judgments regarding the force of freedom within literary invention; the latter is ideally experienced in its unpredictability.
