Proust’s knowledge of Kant is well attested. It was derived from his experience of a philosophical education that was dominated at the time by Kantianism, at the Lycée Condorcet, where he was taught by Alphonse Darlu, and later as an undergraduate student at the Sorbonne, where he was taught by Émile Boutroux. Yet we must make a distinction between Kant and Kantianism. With a focus on time and subjectivity, we reflect here on the enigmatic incompatibility between the complexity of Kant and the superficial references to him made by the Proustian narrator.
