The focus of this article is how the work of Roland Barthes sheds light on the discontinuist dimension of Marcel Proust’s work. The way in which his work and his life shape Barthes’ inquiry allows the question of discontinuity to be brought into the question of writing itself, a gesture dependent on the discontinuous timeline of life. In this way, writing initiates a new temporal order.
