Nicolas Pelleton, “The greatness and decadence of Rome in Bossuet. Variations on a rhetorical topos”
In pulpit eloquence, the topos of Rome’s greatness and decadence is not so much the object of a descriptive representation as it is the basis for reflecting upon the vanity of human glory and on the eternal greatness of Christ. Greatness and decadence mirror one another, and Bossuet uses enunciative device which emphasize that. We also suggest a possible interpretation of the topoi found in pulpit eloquence.
Keywords: Bossuet, Rome, greatness, decadence, stylistics, rhetoric, utterance.
Clément Van Hamme, « In angulo Italiæ.
Bossuet and the Republic of Venice”
Examining the representation of Venice in Bossuet’s work sheds light on the status Bossuet grants to this apparently peripheral area of Italy in his ecclesiastical erudition. It also makes it possible to consider how such a reference was handled by a bishop whose Gallicanism was intensely discussed, even though the Republic and its official theologian, Paolo Sarpi, aroused a keen interest of Gallican circles at the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries.
Keywords: Bossuet, Venice, Sarpi, anti-Romanism, republic, forbidden, unity, variations, Protestantism.
Anne Régent-Susini, “A Venetian Bossuet? The representation of the Protestant Reformation in the Albrizzi edition of Bossuet’s complete works”
The first edition of Bossuet’s “complete works” was published in Venice in the eighteenth century. This article questions the contrast that emerges in this edition between an iconography representing, directly or symbolically, the Reformation, and a “rococo” iconography apparently unrelated to the content of the texts it illustrates. It suggests that some illustrations can be viewed as part of a visual sylleptic effect, an intersemiotic translation of a usually verbal figure.
Keywords: Bossuet, Venice, Albrizzi, Tiepolo, Piazetta, syllepsis, intersemiotic, rococo, polemic, Melanchthon, semiotics, preaching.
Roberto Romagnino, “A eulogy for Bossuet in Rome in 1705. L’immagine del Vescovo by Paul Alexandre Maffei”
This article focuses on the text of the eulogy on Bossuet delivered by the Italian scholar Paul-Alexandre Maffei in 1705 during a session of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome. An analysis of the intertext that provided the material for this unusually structured eulogy suggests that it is in fact a pastiche of the materials consulted, prepared probably on the initiative and with the help of personalities close to the bishop of Meaux.
Keywords: eulogy, panegyric, pastiche, French circles in Rome, reception of Bossuet.
Maria Vita Romeo, “In the footsteps of Bossuet in Italy”
Since the turn of the eighteenth century, translations of Bossuet’s writings have marked the presence of his thought in Italy: for example, the Italian translation of the Relation sur le quiétisme dates from 1698. Over the course of the eighteenth 216century, the spread of Bossuet’s works was attested in Sicily. In the nineteenth century meanwhile, Bossuet notably influenced Manzoni. Since 2002, translations of Traité de la concupiscence, Traité du libre arbitre, and Traité sur la connaissance de Dieu et de soi-même have been published.
Keywords: theology, philosophy, freedom, responsibility, ethics, education, Manzoni.
Benedetta Papasogli, “Leopardi and Bossuet’s language”
Leopardi’s anti-Bossuetism is a crucial part of understanding the Italian poet’s relations with this French language and culture that represented for him, par excellence, the “otherness” necessary for the definition of his own identity. His virulent criticism, which seems to arise from a disappointed love, has keen aspects which studies on Bossuet have, for the most part, overlooked. Intertextual interplays, infrequent but fascinating, emerge, suggesting possibilities for further exploration.
Keywords: language, Bossuet, Leopardi, romanticism of the classics, boldness, enthusiasm.
217Nicolas Pelleton, “Metaphorical variations of the motif of clothing in Bossuet”
Reflecting the spirit of the baroque period, the motif of clothing ceaselessly evolves in Bossuet’s work. These metamorphoses can be observed in the stylistic and enunciative construction of speeches by the bishop of Meaux. This article analyzes how the motif of clothing, in accordance with Catholic dogma, oscillates between referential and metaphorical representation.
Keywords: Bossuet, vestment, metaphor, stylistics, utterance.
