Leopardi’s anti-Bossuetism is a crucial part of understanding the Italian poet’s relations with this French language and culture that represented for him, par excellence, the “otherness” necessary for the definition of his own identity. His virulent criticism, which seems to arise from a disappointed love, has severe features that studies on Bossuet have, for the most part, overlooked. Intertextual interplays, infrequent but fascinating, emerge, suggesting possibilities for further exploration.
