Although for the author of La Comédie humaine, Bossuet was a source of poetic images that were capable of being re-imagined, and an institutional authority in defense of the family, religion, and the monarchy, Balzac’s leanings were toward mysticism. In him we can see the tension between personal feeling and declarations of principle that lay somewhere between Fénelon and Bossuet.
