Bertrand’s play Daniel gives an impression of confinement in several ways. The three acts are presented as sharply delineated images, both spatially and by elements that thwart all dynamism. What’s more, the play sees a demonic figure impose his might. However, this creature also grows spiritually weaker, and the character comes to be associated with fatality. The play, in its very form, thus functions as a prison for the protagonists.
