In the novel and short stories of the nineteenth century, sequences of affective memory serve as temporal exchanges, incidents, and compositional rhymes. Studying these sequences provides access to the deep structure of the texts as well as to the intimate workings of the plot, as this work, with its corpus of 170 novels and short stories from Senancour to Proust, confirms.
