This paper looks at the queer subculture in London at the end of the 19th century. It maps out the cartography of a “prudish [city] with all vices on offer” and introduces a sociolect then in circulation among this marginalised community, called parlyaree. We can henceforth consider the possible involvement of Rimbaud and Verlaine in this culture during their shared life in London, and take a fresh look at the Illuminations, as exemplified by our reading of “Parade” and “Ville”.
