Jean-Pierre Bertrand, « “Influences froides”.
Jean-Pierre Bertrand, “Cold influences. Rereading the ‘lettres du voyant’”
The goal of this essay is not so much to dress a catalogue of the various influences by which Rimbaud was either formed as a poet as it is to delve into the question of influence, a signifier that is nothing if not ladden in the nineteenth century. In so doing, it proposes a reading of the ways in which Rimbaud deployed the notion or problem of “influence,” most notably in the so-called “Seer Letters” (13 and 15 May, sent to Izambard and Demeny, respectively).
Keywords: “Seer” letters (“lettres du voyant”), influence, manifesto/programme, objective/subjective poetry, (literary) value.
308Antoine Nicolle, “‘Chant de guerre parisien’’s Function in the May 15, 1871 Letter. A parodic example of citizen poetry ‘à l’antique’”
This article offers a detailed analysis of the “Parisian War Song”, based on the idea that Rimbaud derides not only Versailles propaganda, but also that of the communards. In the wider context of the letter of 15 May 1871, it appears that this poem is a parodic illustration of “ancient poetry” – a form of poetry destined, according to Rimbaud, to be outdated.
Keywords: war song, parody, propaganda, pragmatic, Paris Commune.
Benoît de Cornulier, “Poetry and the ends of the Commune. A reading of ‘Les Poètes de sept ans’”
The reading proposed in this essay of “Les Poètes de sept ans” places the poem in relation to the author ’ s poetic and personal situation towards the end of the Paris Commune.
Keywords: Paris Commune, Visionary poet, Poetic narration.
Henri Scepi, “Notes on ‘Le Bateau ivre’. Rimbaud, Poe, Hugo and the ‘stammering prodigy’”
Taking “Le Bateau ivre” as its point of critical focus, the present study takes an intertextual path in and out of the poem in order to account for its varying sites 309 of poetic, ideological and political resonance with other poems and poets. Rimbaud deftly moves from the Biblical psalm tradition to an intertextual field dominated by references to Poe, Baudelaire, and Hugo – so that the adventure of the poem itself is tightly interwoven with the form and fluctuations of thought.
Keywords: Baudelaire, Poe, Hugo, reflexivity, thought, vision.
Frédéric Thomas, “Paris, autumn 1871, returns to order”
In October 1871, Rimbaud inscribes the sonnet “Paris” within the pages of the Album zutique. This essay shows how a more precise analysis of the Parisian context behind the poem, as well as the discovery of a contemporary article of a central figure of this poem – Robinet –, will allow us to better understand the logics and plays of signification of this otherwise disorienting text, which constitutes a crystallization of Rimbaud ’ s poetic output as such in late 1871.
Keywords: Paris, The Commune, (return to Order), Zutism, Robinet.
Christophe Bataillé, “Presages of revolt. ‘Le Forgeron’”
This article seeks to show through micrological analysis of Rimbaud ’ s « Forgeron » (1870) the extent to which the poet indirectly conjures up the actuality of his own 310 fraught era under the auspices of a 1792 episode from the French Revolution. What one finds in the folds of this historical parallax is nothing short of the seeds of the poet ’ s later engagement with the Commune, germinating as early as the autumn of 1870.
Key-words: Government of National Defense, Napoléon III, the Second Empire, Socialism, Anticlericalism, Republicanism.
Yves Reboul, “Crow me a river, remembering Violence. About “Les Corbeaux” and “La Rivière de Cassis””
“Les Corbeaux” and “La Rivière de Cassis” both conjure up memories of the blood spilled in Paris during the “terrible year” and the Bloody Week which put an end to the Commune: for the former, the spectre of violence appears in the guise of an ostensibly patriotic poem, and in the allegorical dream-like landscapes for the latter Had Rimbaud been able to publish a volume of his most recent writings in 1872, we can rest assured these poems would have figured side by side in such a collection.
Keywords: “Les Corbeaux”, “La Rivière de Cassis”, The Paris Commune, The Bloody Week, allegory.
311Marc Dominicy, “More on laughter and smiling. In his travesty of Vergil, Germain Nouveau imitates Aristophanes but evokes Rimbaud”
In Nouveau ’ s “Çà, ma muse, chantons,” a travesty of Vergil, verse 61 is strikingly deviant. By substituting grasses (“fat”) for Grâces , Nouveau produced a calque of Aristophanes ’ “nursling of the Graces”, pointing thus both to the stock expression “nursling of the Muses” and to the promiscuity allegedly licensed by Fourier ’ s doctrine. In addition, his “nursling” should be identified with Rimbaud.
Keywords: Germain Nouveau, Vergil, Aristophanes, Fourier, Rimbaud.
Alain Bardel, “Les Illuminations, between melancholia and utopia”
Childhood, the evocation of a poet striving to make himself a seer , the drifting from City to Cities and, finally, the depiction of arriving at the age of twenty ( Jeunesse III ): Rimbaud went to some lengths to give his Illuminations the overall look of a Kunstlerroman . What does the « moment of Illuminations », as it were, represent in the poet ’ s intellectual trajectory? Interrogating the structure and organisation of Rimbaud ’ s volume of prose poems, the present essay seeks to address this, and other, questions.
Keywords: The Illumintions , volume (of poems in prose), Paris Commune, melancholia, utopia, politics (of the Illuminations).
Luke Carson, “‘Plenitude of the great dream’. Rimbaud, Ashbery and the ‘vision’ of the unknown”
John Ashbery ’ s 2011 translation of Rimbaud ’ s Illuminations came as a surprise for readers familiar with this poet ’ s work. A reading attentive to the presence of the Rimbaldian corpus in Ashbery ’ s 2002 volume Chinese Whispers shows that those moments where an intertextual other presence rear their heads are always also moments in which the poet not only carefully affiliates or identifies with Rimbaud and in which Ashbery ’ s lyric subject arrives at a tentative, searching form of self-recognition
Keywords: poetic vision/visionary poetics, translation, John Ashbery, lyricism, philosophy and poetics.
François-René Swennen and QuentinHayois-Rosman, “The Rosman case”
The portrait of Arthur Rimbaud wounded by Paul Verlaine is signed by Jef Rosman. It appeared in Paris in the early post Second World War period and was exhibited and then sold by a bookseller located on Boulevard Saint-Germain. He has been identified here. The painter Jef Rosman is regularly seen as a certain André Rosman. Who was this man, born in Brussels in 1853 and died in Chicago in 1932?
Keywords: portrait, André Rosman, bookseller, painter.
Victor Ginsburgh and Stamos Metzidakis, “(The) Vowels (Sonnet) revisited”
We surmise that in his celebrated sonnet “Voyelles”, Rimbaud gave a preeminence to colors, rather than to vowels. Indeed, in most languages there is a “natural” order in which the names of colors are born–and this order is the same in most civilizations–which is less arbitrary than the letters in an alphabet. Rimbaud may have associated vowels to colors instead of colors to vowels.
Keywords: order of appearance of vowels in alphabets, order of appearance of colors in language, Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, Chomsky ’ s hypothesis.
François-René Swennen, « Cirages onctueux, slogan ou marque ? »
François-René Swennen, “Unctuous polishes or polishes Onctueux?”
In one of his zutic Conneries , entitled Paris , Arthur Rimbaud quotes unctuous polishes ( Cirages onctueux ). The author acquired an old polish box of Onctueux brand. Onctueux : advertising slogan or brand name?
Keywords: Zutisme, “Paris”, polish, Onctueux, brand.
François-René Swennen, “Boulion and Boglione, a (bad) Belgian story?”
In their correspondence of spring 1873, Rimbaud and Verlaine quote the city of Bouillon, whose name they sometimes spell wrongly ( Boulion ) or whimsically ( Boglione ). Hypothesis: the poets may have been amused by phonological features proper to Belgian francophones.
Keywords: Laïtou, Bouillon, Boglione, phonology, Belgium.
Philippe Rocher, “‘Oraison du soir’ and Verlaine”
This micrological intervention suggests further paths for reading Verlaine ’ s late sonnet “À Arthur Rimbaud” (“To/For Arthur Rimbaud”) in the light of Rimbaud ’ s 1871 sonnet, “Oraison du soir” (“An Evening Prayer”)
Keywords: intertextuality, sonnet, “An Evening Prayer”, “To/For Arthur Rimbaud”.
Emmanuel Latreille, “Life in form of lottery”
The last text by Rimbaud, read out to Isabelle, associates a collection of “teeth” and a double request (changing services, take a boat). Not a delirium: out of a counting 315 and semantic game playing with signs (numbers and letters) appears a philosophy of life in which contingencies and encounters sustain the expression of a shared desire, and its abandonment by everyone.
Keywords: lottery, account, service, desir, tomb.
