This article draws on the talks between Walter Benjamin and Bertold Brecht on Rimbaud’s Bateau ivre in the aim to better understand why the French poet raises the interest of the German philosopher. Benjamin focuses on the nature of Rimbaud’s poetical images, the place he gives to the artist in the society, and his conception of history. As his criticism on surrealism, Rimbaud’s poetry has been for Benjamin a significant step in the way he thought the society he lived in, with its never-ending threats, and his own conception of history.
