The question of “sensibility” is analysed in relation to benevolence – a commonplace of the literature of sensibility. La Vie de Marianne stages a series of situations in which pity is provoked by the spectacle of pain, yet reactions to this spectacle are profoundly ambiguous, like the word “sensibility”. The connections between compassion, love, and desire are explored in these episodes.
