The reception of Noé at its publication was twofold. On the one hand, the unjust condemnation of the author after the Liberation of France had hardly diminished. On the other, this chronicle (or this pseudo-essay) did not chime with readers’ expectations at the time, even the experts. A review of the critiques that appeared in the contemporary press, both newspapers and reviews, shows how interest in the narrative dimension outweighed analysis of the real implications of the work.
