The notion of domain, or semantic field, is a defining principle of terminology and neology studies. A critical approach to this common sense notion shows its inadequacy for thinking about terminological practices in their complexity. Illustrated by environmental issues, this article aims at going beyond the notion of domain which, although intuitive and undoubtedly useful, is epistemologically unstable. It proposes to take a semasiological approach based on the variety of discourse practices.
