In the eighteenth century, scientists claimed their right to modify the established meanings of words to give them a scientific acceptation and also to resort to neologisms. From a corpus created for this thesis, this article addresses the most interesting cases of neology in botany and chemistry in order to examine its implementation in the scientific terminology of the fields discussed as well as in the lexicographical sources of the time.
