Relations between lexical blending and neology are rarely
the main focus in studies about this morphological process. This paper aims at
assessing the role of lexical blending as a neological process. A number of lexical
studies will be considered, which will be an opportunity to highlight the issues
related to the nature of the units observed in these studies. It turns out that, in these
works, the blends which are generally analyzed are fanciful neologisms, which is
not representative of those used by the speakers. Ways of overcoming these issues
will be considered, while examining recent blends to demonstrate the vitality of this
process in French.
