A study of Maxime Du Camp’s photography mission from the point of view of the history of Egyptology. Although this enterprise was ardently supported by the members of the Académie des Inscriptions, its contribution to science was nevertheless rather limited; the reason may be the encyclopedic drive of the photographer and the existence of other parallel projects led by Egyptologists who are more responsive to the needs of this young discipline.
