Providing another angle on the relationship between literature and reality, the fait divers serves as raw material for the work of Marguerite Duras. Appealing to the affect and the “causality paradox” (Barthes), it questions the deep structures of the imaginary, highlights the omnipresence of death and fatality, and adds a metaphysical dimension. Blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, the fait divers poses a challenge to writing, this will be explored in detail in the current volume.
