Laurence Denooz and Nehmetallah Abi-Rached, “Introduction”
The tenth issue of LiCArC, entitled Fiction et art au secours du réel: l’engagement des artistes pour une société inclusive et égalitaire (Fiction and art rescuing reality: Artists’ commitment to an inclusive and egalitarian society), continues the examination of the theme of sociopolitical commitment in response to disorder and unrest in contemporary Arab society. This volume presents politically committed artists whose works variously denounce iniquitous or alienating norms, or create a subversive world characterized by a freedom bounded only by their imagination.
Keywords: committed literature, democracy, inclusive society, norms, freedom.
Hadj Dahmane and Mohammed Chehhar, “‘Ballaciner’ around political commitment in cinema in the Maghreb”
Cinema in the Maghreb emerged under colonization, in the shadow of Western cinema, and was inevitably engagé. Our contribution uses several films to analyze this commitment and its new forms, from its genesis to the present. We will examine two types of commitment. One is endemic to the birth of this cinema, linked to the context of liberation. The other is concerned with shedding light, first, on social matters within nation-states, and second, on the “desire for democratization” during the Arab Springs.
Keywords: cinema, democratization, commitment, Maghreb, protean.
Alma Abou Fakher, “The body as a site of dictatorial standardization in Nihād Sīrīs’s al-Ṣamt wa-l-ṣaḫab”
This paper analyzes the hold of dictatorial power on the body in Syrian writer Nihād Sīrīs’s Silence et tumulte. The representation of the body is examined in relation to a recurring phenomenon under a dictatorial regime: al-masirāt or pro-regime demonstrations. The subjects, forced to fill public spaces to celebrate the dictator’s twenty years in power, are represented as standardized and interchangeable bodies, where any singularity is diluted in the anonymity of a crowd blindly submissive to power.
Keywords: body, politics, dictatorship, Nihād Sīrīs, standardization.
247Mohamed Chawki Benhassen, « L’engagement impossible.
Mohamed Chawki BenHassen, “The impossible commitment. The journalist defying the ‘system’ in three novels by Šukrī al-Mabḫūt”
The novels of the Tunisian writer Šukrī al-Mabḫūt suggest exploring (in fiction) the concept of commitment by making it a specific attribute of a character who appears in three novels from the same fictional universe. This study aims to understand how the author uses narrative tools (transfictionality, poetics of the character…) to produce a “thesis” about the impossibility of political commitment in a corruption-ridden society.
Keywords: dictatorship, journalism, transfictionality, thesis novel, Šukrī al-Mabḫūt.
248Pierre-Suzanne Eyenga Onana, “Political commitment and the glimpse of freedom. Postulating an alternative city in Hamadi Labidi’s Le roman du vieux frère”
Hamadi Labidi’s Le roman du vieux frère explores the wave of recriminations expressed by an outraged Tunisian subject, who condemns the persistent misgovernance and the recurrent violent restrictions that weigh on citizens in a “zombified” city where individual freedoms are a mirage… The novel imagines citizen commitment producing a new man and an alternative city in which community life is the norm.
Keywords: perception, liberties, recriminations, commitment, sociocriticism, alterative city, community life.
Maha Smati, “The bookstore, a space to examine literary commitment in Tahar Djaout’s Le Dernier été de la raison”
In his last, unfinished, novel, the Algerian writer Tahar Djaout sent his writing into a brief cycle of literary engagement with a narrative immersed in the violent unrest of the Algerian “Black Decade.” Holed up in his bookstore, Djaout’s main character rejects the fanaticism imposed by the Vigilant Brothers. Yet Le dernier été de la raison lends itself to a more complex reading that questions the real effectiveness of literary engagement during a dark period of Algerian history.
Keywords: francophone Algerian literature, committed literature, Tahar Djaout, Algerian Civil War, sociocriticism.
Mohammed Benlechhab, “Phenomenological reconstruction of war and nostalgic autofiction. West Beirut by Ziad Doueiri”
Ziad Doueiri films the initiatory quest of his fictional alter egos in a city being pulled apart, where existing values are reversed. He develops a committed, phenomenological narration of the outbreak of war and the resulting disorder. This study examines the film’s numerous declarative instances and its identarian and political questioning to show that West Beirut is a nostalgic autofiction forming part of the “untamed memory” of the Lebanese Civil War.
Keywords: Ziad Doueiri, narration, phenomenology, war, West Beirut.
Ibtissam Ouadi-Chouchane, “From unresolved trauma to rebuilding memory of the war’s forgotten people, in Ghita by Aïcha Yacoubi”
Ghita is a monologue in which identity and space are marked by fragmentation, in the historical context of the Spanish Protectorate, a period that caused “trauma chaud” (unresolved trauma) among Moroccans. This trauma is still very vivid for the character of this piece, and feeds a historical memory that the play gradually reveals. A politically committed artist, Yacoubi reserves a special place in her work for women who, whatever the historical period, have lost the most.
Keywords: Moroccan theater, woman, spaces, identities, memory.
Mayssam Yaghi el-Zein, “Fiction and testimony in Samar Yazbek’s La Marcheuse”
What is literature capable of in times of war? What role is left for fiction when reality fills the space of all the possibilities offered by the infinite expanse of the imagination? With La Marcheuse, Samar Yazbek, a politically committed writer and “spokesperson for the Syrian hellscape,” takes us into the swampy maze of the civil war, through her character’s fantastical journey. While this journey may seem surreal, the novelist assures us that there is nothing extreme about the fiction when compared to the violence of the war.
Keywords: Syria, commitment, war, testimony, Samar Yazbek.
Talal Hauchar, “The sociopolitical commitments of contemporary Lebanese theater. The case of theater collectives and monodrama”
This article examines recent plays and performances by contemporary theater collectives and monodrama performers in Lebanon. It highlights their growing sociopolitical commitments, which diverge from previous trends, and maps the direction of 251new theatrical experimentation in the country. It therefore also aspires to fill the gap in documentation of the current state of Lebanese theater.
Keywords: theater, Lebanon, collective, monodrama, political commitment.
Daniela Potenza, “September 11 and Arab theater at the center of marginality”
This paper will first describe post-9/11 Arab-American theater; it will then examine Arab-American theater that addresses 9/11 and its aftermath. The presence of marginality leads us to reflect on Arab theater in Europe that commits to narrating the margins and that, like Arab-American theater, is also highly marginalized in the general theatrical landscape.
Keywords: Arab-American theater, Arab theater, Europe, marginality, September 11, 2001.
The migration crisis as told by Larbi Ramdani”
This contribution highlights the representation of the refugee crisis in al-‘Arabī Ramadānī’s novel Anāšīd al-milḥ and shows how the author becomes the bearer of a new critical commitment, advocating the universality of the right to protection and freedom of movement. By bringing together two figures, the illegal immigrant and the asylum seeker, he manages to dismantle the myth of the one-dimensional economic migrant and the distortions of the humanitarian system.
Keywords: literature of emigration, asylum regime, refugee crisis, commitment, Larbi Ramdani.
Marcella Rubino, “Dissident writing in the work of Abdelaziz Baraka Sākin”
Since the beginning of the protests that led to the fall of the regime, Sudanese demonstrators have accused the state of pitting “Arabs” against “Africans,” terms that refer to complex realities that the social sciences are trying to deconstruct. Young, committed writers participate in this deconstruction: thus, in Baraka Sākin’s work, textual polyphony and an ironic style help form a discourse on Sudanese identity as a plural identity.
Keywords: Sudan, revolution, irony, polyphony, Abdelaziz Baraka Sākin.
Talal Wehbe, “Recontextualizing Lebanese denominational practices on behalf of women in KAFA discourse”
In a country like Lebanon, it is not possible to oppose domestic violence against women without confronting religious institutions. The discourse of feminist organizations therefore often refers to religious discourse. We try to demonstrate this by analyzing the open letter addressed by KAFA to the Lebanese president the day before the promulgation of Law 293 on domestic violence, as well as documents that provide context.
Keywords: Lebanon, domestic violence, KAFA, recontextualization, Law 293.
Noémi Linardi, “The construction of dissident masculinities through the practice of belly dance. The example of Paulikevitch and Khansa”
The artistic practice of Alexandre Paulikevitch and Khansa, two Lebanese belly dancers, profoundly questions archetypal gendered social constructs. Participating in a mainly feminine discipline, they assert the eroticization of their bodies, mixing lascivious positions, powerful movements, and the updating of certain clichés about masculinity. They thus create new masculinities that step out of the frame of heteronormativity.
Keywords: gender performance, masculinity, male eroticism, oriental dance, male belly dance.
Nadjet Amari, “Female identity between social norms and emancipatory quest in Faḍīla al-Fārūq’s Iktišāf al-šahwa”
Violating the taboos of sex and religion, Faḍīla al-Fārūq’s cause is the status and identity of women. Imprisoned in the domestic realm, the woman in her narrative is seen as a mere body, which becomes a terrain where different discourses on social practices, beliefs, and religious discourses merge. The body is a site of tension where she loses self-ownership and her identity, before becoming a site of affirmation and self-emancipation.
Keywords: femininity, masculinity, identity, body, social norm, emancipation, Maghrebi literature.
