This publication aims to examine the question of the body from a transhistorical and multidisciplinary perspective, considering deregulation and disorder as factors of identity evolution and reconstruction. It deals with the representation of the body in its legal and linguistic dimensions, dedicating particular attention to the contemporary novel, which imbues it with a specific status, at the heart of changes in modern fiction.
Keywords: body, disorder, representations, multidisciplinarity, literature.
Mots-clés : ğasad, a‘ḍā’, lexicologie arabe, droit musulman, représentation.
226François Clément, “The body in words or the limbless man”
A survey of paremiological-poetic lexical dictionaries and compendiums, as well as legal literature from the classical period, returns an image of a body that is, by turns, lexicographical, nomenclatural, metaphorical, or legal, but which does not coincide with the anatomical body. This examination reveals the body as it is reconstructed by the mind in the order of speech and law: a scattered, fragmentary being that clearly resembles what the individual allows to be seen of his person in the gaze of others.
Keywords: ğasad, a‘ḍā’, Arabic lexicology, Muslim law, representation.
Marie-Hélène Avril, “The body and the bayān in Ǧāḥiẓ’s Kitāb al-bayān wa-l-tabyīn”
In Kitāb al-bayān wa-l-tabyīn, considered the first work of Arabic rhetoric, Ǧāḥiẓ proposes an anthology, a rhetoric, an oratorical art, and a theory of communication. A close study of texts dealing with this theory of communication reveals the constant presence of the lexicon of the body. How is the body present in the bayān? In what ways is the bayān embodied? And what are the theoretical implications of this embodiment of the bayān?
Keywords: Kitāb al-bayān wa-l-tabyīn, Ǧāḥiẓ, medieval Arabic rhetoric, body, Arabic lexicology.
Ahmed Oulddali, “The body in mālikite legal examinations”
In Muslim legal literature, marriage contracts may be dissolved if one of the partners is afflicted with a disability representing a critical defect. The same also applies to the sale of slaves. Establishing the defect often requires an examination of the body by an expert. To avoid any abuses, mālikite jurists set out the conditions under which this examination must take place in an attempt to reconcile the burden of proof with the need to preserve the intimacy of the body.
Keywords: marriage, slave, examination, mālikite, Muslim legal literature.
Mohamed Hendaz, “The dead body: Order in disorder. The case of undressing mortal remains in Muslim legal literature”
Death brings its own states of disorder, notably the decomposition of bodies, against which the living fight by means of funeral rites. While the deceased can be represented as a destabilizing threat to the construction of the social order, other conceptions exist: the corpse can also reestablish the order perverted by the living. This article offers an analysis of the dead body in Muslim legal literature through its ambivalent tendency to produce order and disorder.
Keywords: death, social order, Muslim legal literature, funeral rites, corpse.
Chloé Tazartez, “The body as a terrorist issue in Khalifa and al-Ahdal”
Through a reading of the novels of al-Ahdal and Khalifa, this article examines the use of bodies in the fictionalization of terrorism. A personal and political battleground, the body is mistreated, reified, a source of suffering but also liberation. It is a concrete manifestation of the oppression that tyrants inflict on the people, and simultaneously a site of exploration between life and death for every individual. Therein, the inscrutable, incomprehensible, and inexplicable nature of terrorism is etched onto the body.
Keywords: reification, trauma, terrorism, metamorphosis, traces.
The mythical body and disorder”
This paper studies the representation of the female body in the novel Djazya et les Derviches by Abdelhamid Benhedouga. This character is the avatar of the well-known mythical figure Djazya of the Hilali epic. Due to her astounding beauty, the character is a source of harmony and of successive states of disorder that ensue in the village following her transgressive dance with the revolutionary student Lahmar.
Keywords: female body, beauty, myth, revolution, disorder.
Miloud Gharrafi, “The migrant body in the Arabic novel. From exoticism to alienation”
This contribution sheds light on the literary representation of the migrant body as a metaphor and a physical reality, studying its evolution in the Arabic novel between two distinct periods: that embodied by the story of Saleh, and that of present-day Arab migration. Although issues like identity and alterity are still current, the Arabic migration novel exposes them differently based on whether the mobility of the migrant body is vertical (North/South) or horizontal (South/South) and trans-Arabian.
Keywords: alienation, body, fulfillment, exoticism, migration.
Rayya Roumanos, “The eruption of bodies onto Arabic screens. A controlled liberalization”
This article discusses the configurations of a standardized representation of male and female bodies by the Arabic television industry. By analyzing pan-Arabian reality 230television shows, it shows how seemingly liberated images of Arab men and women, presented as the typical products of a “glocalized” modernity, are merely artifacts of a well-established industry reintroducing, via Westernized televisual devices, traditional Eastern norms.
Keywords: male and female bodies, cinema, glocalization, reality television, representation.
Amina Chorfa, “The image of the female body and identity construction between alterity and alteration. A sociocritical study of Tiflat al-samāʾ by Samar Yazbek”
This analysis of Ṭiflat al-samāʾ studies the female body as a symbolic site of power and a battleground for freedom. The author examines Alaouite and Sunni female identities through a corporeity that is a “source” of conflict both with the self and with the other. The Yazbekian body acts as a vehicle for a discourse that betrays social malaise and personal discontent. Sociocultural and religious stigmas are etched onto the female body, which is judged, fixed, idealized, and fantasized.
Keywords: body, identity construction, alterity, Samar Yazbek, sociological criticism
Élisabeth Vauthier, “Man or woman? The cross-dressed body in Rajā’ ‘Ālim’s Ḫātim”
Rajā’ ‘Ālim’s novel stages the problematic body of the eponymous character, divided between male and female. Forced to cross-dress to hide a secret and live a hybrid identity, the character is established, page by page, as a metaphor for a compartmentalized society in which those who deviate from the dominant order are not tolerated. Ḫātim’s body thus creates disorder, but a disorder that fails to give rise to new identity values in the represented universe.
Keywords: gender, cross-dressing, disorder, dominant order, social violence
Leila Nafati, “The body and identity in Āmāl Muḫtār’s Naḫb al-Ḥayāt”
In the novel Naḫb al-Ḥayāt, Āmāl Muḫtār focuses on writing about the body. Placed in relation to the question of individual identity and freedom, the body also appears to play a key role in the narrative. In this article, we focus on body language and the expression (through gestures) of passions. Language expressed by the body sometimes shapes the relationships between characters and replaces spoken language.
Keywords: Āmāl Muḫtār, writing of the body, expression, passions, body language.
Laurence Denooz, “Beyond taboos: the female body and social disorder. The case of The Story of Zahra by Hanan al-Sheikh”
The Story of Zahra is the tale of the journey of a female body, from self-denial to acceptance of intercorporeity. The child, almost oblivious of her own individuality, makes way for a young woman in a state of unease, who deliberately rejects all interaction with others. In doing so, she denies her own existence in a world from which she protects herself by any means possible, until, finally, her long-denied body compels her to accept herself within the world.
Keywords: body, Hanan al-Shaykh, taboos, intercorporeity, sensoriality.
Martina Censi, “Body, difference, and identity in two novels by Salwā al-Na‘īmī”
This article explores the role of the body in the novels Burhān al-ʻasal (The Proof of the Honey, 2007) and Šibh al-ǧazīra al-ʻarabiyya (The Arabian Peninsula, 2012) by Syrian writer Salwā al-Naʻīmī. In both novels, the female body is the site of the renewal of the process of identity formation and recognition for the protagonists. Accordingly, this study explores how the “performed and performative body” can call into question normative methods of defining identity.
Keywords: al-Naʻīmī, performed body, performative body, identity, body.
