Post 1830 Balzac’s novels use counter-revolutionary concepts, providing a critical analysis of French society. The Country Doctor is a good example, with a fictionalization of Bonald’s ideas. The appropriation of this heritage, allowing an evaluation of the new deal, could be construed as its modernization.
