FROM THE 18th TO THE 20th CENTURY

This collection constitutes a unique corpus of its kind. It brings together 61,000 pages, going from 1741 to 1927, gathering 72 authors and containing 169 titles.

Esthetics, philosophy, art history, texts by painters and writers, but also novels and artists’ journals : the reader will be struck by the diversity of the fields of reflection and writing offered.

The Writings on Art are essentially centred on art criticism, i.e. on the salons and on literary monographies devoted to painters by important writers and critics from 1741 to 1927 : the first date corresponds to Father André’s Essay on the beautiful, an essential work for classical esthetics, followed a few years later, in 1747, by the first real salon (containing judgement on the paintings exhibited and not just description), composed by La Font de Saint Yenne ; the corpus ends with the last volume of Proust’s Recherche du temps perdu in 1927.

After that date, the salon lost its status and writings on art, under the influence of the Surrealists, changed direction and broke with the tradition. Next to the classical “giants” (Diderot, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Goncourt, Huysmans, Zola and Apollinaire) and influential critics (Planche, Thoré, Champfleury, Mirbeau), will be found a selection of major works in esthetics (sometimes in contemporary translation, as for Lessing and Winckelmann) and art history (Aurier, Bénédite, Weill), including the whole of the monumental History of painters of all schools in all times, which may be considered one of the most interesting documents concerning art history as it was practised in the 19th century, as well as the contributions of the most eminent artists themselves (Falconet, Delacroix and Rodin) and the major artistic novels : all works which interweave descriptive and theoretical perspectives.
