Leibniz’s philosophy—theological, metaphysical, and idealist—ought not to have interested the materialist authors of the eighteenth century. Yet La Mettrie, Diderot, d’Holbach, and Helvétius all used Leibniz’s work to develop radical ideas. This book retraces this forgotten reception.
