We propose to examine gendered representations of speech in Ce qui ne meurt pas. The characters' speech dramatizes their place in society. Is it treated differently depending on whether it originates with male or female characters? After examining the analogies set up by the narrator to designate speech as a symbolic flow, we consider conversation in its power to transform beings, sexes and genders.
