This article looks at the two male friendships that marked Barbey's life. After the untimely death of Guérin, his chosen brother, Barbey established Trebutien as his alter ego, sharing and accompanying his sentimental and emotional life. A study of their Correspondence, punctuated by fiery declarations of friendship and love, reveals the way Barbey makes Trebutien an intimate receptacle of the self, weaving with this companion of the pen a bond from which the homosexual horizon cannot escape.
