In Le Rivage des Syrtes and Un balcon en forêt, we observe a change in the heroes’ attitude toward war. In Gracq’s essays from the period 1940–1950, we find the same evolution as the shift from Aldo to Grange. After the lecture “Le Surréalisme et la Littérature contemporaine,” Gracq chose to be anachronistic and to stay by the wayside of his era.
