The Manuscrits de guerre shed a striking light on the collective experience that presides over the origins of the writer and the formation of the ethos that makes him unique. Comparable in some respects to Alain’s Souvenirs de guerre (1920) and even more so to Marc Bloch’s L’Étrange défaite (1946), but in a different way, Louis Poirier, Julien Gracq poses a tangle of questions that are still relevant today: What community can I say I belong to?
