Sympathy for the Evil Relative evil in the adaptations of fairy tales in the 21^st century

In recent decades, the traditional roles of fairytale characters have shifted toward a growing moral hybridity, with a strong emphasis on ambiguous antiheroes. Disney productions such as the film Maleficent (2014) or the series Once Upon a Time (2011–2018) illustrate these new character models and show how the last bastion of literary Manichaeism is yielding to the relativism of contemporary culture.
