Thaïs Bihour, “Between inhumanity and dehumanization. The figure of the Kraut Wolf in 1914–1918”
In 1917, Guy Arnoux and Paul Moreau-Vauthier published a retelling of Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (the French version of Little Red Riding Hood). With a strong patriotic aim, it tells a tale in which the big bad wolf becomes the enemy incarnate. This animal-character transcends the figure of the villain, transforming the German into a being who is inhuman by nature, but is, above all, dehumanized. The aim is to instill hatred of the enemy into the minds of the younger generation, in a word, to inculcate hatred for the big bad Kraut.
Keywords: Little Red Riding Hood, fairytale, First World War, Big Bad Wolf, propaganda.
Lison Jousten, “The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. Two archetypes meet”
The Three Little Pigs stands out as a textbook case among the stories featuring the Big Bad Wolf. The wolf becomes the enemy of the pig, a creature traditionally associated with childhood. This duo, based on a principle of opposition, stirs up a series of representations that play out implicitly. The journey made by the cultural and cinematic history of the pig allows us to gradually outline the contours of the place occupied by the wolf, the “bad guy” of the tale.
Keywords: Three Little Pigs, Big Bad Wolf, fairytale, Walt Disney.
Marion Duval, “But who is still afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?”
Author-illustrators like Philippe Corentin, Geoffroy de Pennart, and Mario Ramos modernize Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), using humor to surprise the audience. The infamous predator that haunted Perrault’s tale continues to fascinate, but he has become so charming that he steals the spotlight from the little girl. How can we understand this move to reject the monstrosity of the wolf in favor of humanizing and even rehabilitating the figure who has long embodied absolute evil?
Keywords: Little Red Riding Hood, Big Bad Wolf, fairytale, parody, anthropomorphism.
Mathilde Brissonnet-Teyssédou, “The wolf is back. The ‘new’ face of the wolf in the tale of Little Red Riding Hood”
While the dangerous figure described by Charles Perrault has almost disappeared in favor of a charming wolf, sometimes even stripped of its animality, the adaptations and illustrations from Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood) by Lydie Arickx (2012), Adolfo Serra (2012), and Joanna Concejo (2015) undertake a reimagining of the tale, restoring the frightening and intriguing image of the animal through the interpretation of the graphics.
Keywords: Little Red Riding Hood, fairytale, adaptation, anthropomorphism, animality.
Mirta Cimmino, « Sympathy for the Evil.
Mirta Cimmino, “Sympathy for the Evil. Relative evil in the adaptations of fairy tales in the 21st century”
In recent decades, the traditional roles of fairytale characters have shifted toward a growing moral hybridity, with a strong emphasis on ambiguous antiheroes. Disney 166productions such as the film Maleficent (2014) or the series Once Upon a Time (2011–2018) illustrate these new character models and show how the last bastion of literary Manichaeism is yielding to the relativism of contemporary culture.
Keywords: Walt Disney, adaptation, antihero, television series, Manichaeism.
Isabelle-Rachel Casta, “‘After the first death…’ The emergence of Children of the Night in Laisse-moi entrer (John Lindqvist), Ma chère grand-mère (Catherine Brighton) and La Balafre (Jean-Claude Mourlevat)”
In the works of these authors, the shock of the sudden emergence of child-specters challenges the rational order of the world before restoring and subsuming it: Catherine Brighton gives a portrait of a young castaway from the future, John Ajvide Linqvist considers the conditions necessary for the survival of vampires, and Jean-Claude Mourlevat imagines a teenager from the 1990s faced with the ghosts of the Nazi Occupation and the Holocaust. This diverse array of scenographies creates a kind of typogenesis of the “children of horror.”
Keywords: vampire, supernatural, Holocaust, time travel, rewriting.
Nicole Callon-Wells, “The villain at the heart of the contradictions of youth literature”
On what terms have contemporary authors, heirs to a tradition of protecting young people, approached the figure of Evil since the publication of the first Harry Potter novel? Can their choice have repercussions on how a hero is constructed and question the relationship of youth-literature authors with their readership? These are the questions raised by works for young people by writers such as Valérie Dayre, Jean-Claude Mourlevat, and Patrick Ness, who each offer some answers.
Keywords: youth literature, fantasy, science fiction, Harry Potter, edification.
Roland Carrée, “On the other side of the door. The monsters of childhood and child-monster in Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University”
Monstropolis is powered by energy derived from the cries of frightened children. In the eyes of these children, the monsters fully deserve their status as villains. But it turns out that children are also dangerous creatures who, in the monsters’ eyes, carry contagious diseases. The villains in Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University are thus everyone and no one at the same time, each character convinced that the enemy is on the other side of the door.
Keywords: Walt Disney, monsters, fear, childhood, teratology.
Bochra Charnay, “The depths of evil. Murderous mothers and assassin children in the traditional tale”
Stepmothers and wicked mothers play important roles in orally transmitted tales. But sometimes a child becomes a matricide. This superlative cruelty is at the heart of La Mère traîtresse or Le Ruban qui rend fort, a tale with nineteen versions in the catalogue of French tales. We analyze the figure of the “bad guy” in this corpus, to which we add, for comparison and cross-cultural exploration, eight Algerian versions in Kabyle and Arabic.
Keywords: fairytale, stepmother, infanticide, parricide, rewriting.
Violaine Beyron, “The Ordinary Dark Ones in the Realist Novel for Young People”
What does Josiane, the unpleasant, homophobic half-sister of the Morlevent children contribute to the story Oh, Boy!? What role do the racist adults in Maboul à zéro or the discriminatory teacher in La Vie, en gros shoulder? How and why do Maxime’s parents reject his HIV-positive uncle in Adieu Maxime?
Keywords: fairytale, racism, discrimination, homophobia, edification.
Marine Cellier, “Doctor Facilier in The Princess and the Frog. Ideological issues of representation of the first black villain by Disney”
In The Princess and the Frog (2009), the first African-American Disney heroine, Tiana, faces off against the fearsome Doctor Facilier, who thus becomes the first black character elevated to the status of Disney villain. Beneath this apparent novelty, and in keeping with the tradition of Disney villains, this fascinating and charismatic voodoo-wizard character in fact crystallizes the stereotypical view of this cult inherited from African slaves deported to the United States.
Keywords: Walt Disney, fairytale, racism, witchcraft, voodoo.
Eric Auriacombe, “Harry Potter, from the story’s bad guy to the bad guy’s story”
The connection between Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter is revealed over the course of increasingly nuanced and complex encounters. Beyond this specular relationship 170between the hero and his double, we are dealing with a dual infantile relationship that brings into play the monstrous fantasies of orphaned, bereaved, and traumatized babies. Voldemort is the object contained in Harry’s psychic crypt, and only the ethical sacrifice of the latter allows the fight against death to find a humanized solution.
Keywords: Harry Potter, monstrosity, edification, Manichaeism, psychoanalysis.
Nathalie Dufayet, “Lord Voldemort, ‘the villain of thousand and one faces’”
As hateful and charismatic as Darth Vader, Voldemort is the real object of interest in the Harry Potter series, which owes its success to its antihero more than its hero. This heroism and seduction of evil is the result of a fictional trap that Rowling sets for her readers. Here we study the workings of this trap, in connection with the universal pattern of heroic stages defined by Joseph Campbell in his comparative mythology essay, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949).
Keywords: Harry Potter, Joseph Campbell, antiheroes, myths, archetypes.
171Isabelle Olivier, “Evil, mystery, and redemption. A comparative study of Severus Snape and Mrs Coulter”
Severus Snape and Mrs Coulter are probably the two most significant villains in the fantasy world in recent decades. They are representative of an ambition to break with Manichaeism and participate in a real education in complexity. But both characters also both question their life choices out of love. In this light, they therefore carry the humanist convictions of their authors and their success is indicative of the ethical expectations of young contemporary readers.
Keywords: fantasy, Harry Potter, edification, Manichaeism, His Dark Materials.
