Maria Susana Seguin, « Introduction. Athéisme ou athéismes ? »
Maria Susana Seguin est MCF HDR à l’U. Montpellier 3.
Maria Susana Seguin, “Introduction. Atheism ou atheisms?”
Maria Susana Seguin is a lecturer and director of research at the University of Montpellier 3. Author of Science et religion dans la pensée française du xviii e siècle (Champion, 2001), associate-editor of La Lettre clandestine , codirector of the platform http://philosophie-clandestine.huma-num.fr/index.html, and senior member of the Institute Universitaire de France.
Studies of clandestine philosophical manuscripts have significantly contributed to renewing research into religious disbelief; they have also led to rethinking the question of how atheism is defined. The thematic dossier La Lettre clandestine explores the diverse approaches to this issue between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
Keywords: atheism, definition, disbelief, libertinism, clandestine philosophical manuscripts.
Publications : Batailles libertines, 2020 ; The Philosophers and the Bible (éd.), 2022.
Anna Lisa Schino, “Libertine atheisms in the seventeenth century”
Anna Lisa Schino teaches history of philosophy in the philosophy department at Sapienza University of Rome. Her research focuses on libertinage érudit and the connection between religion and politics in the seventeenth century. Publications: Batailles libertines , 2020; The Philosophers and the Bible (ed.), 2022.
This article looks at atheism in the libertinage érudit movement and extends the analysis to the positions taken by Campanella, the libertines ’ interlocutor. Examining the written work enables us to identify a political, moral, rationalist, and anthropological atheism. The origins and strength of religion lie in the passions that give rise to beliefs relating to the supersensible, but just as important are the mechanisms through which these persuasions spread, propagating through contagion and conformism.
Keywords: atheism, libertinage érudit , dissimulation, group psychology, links between religion and politics.
Mario Biagioni, “Christian Francken and the fear of atheism. From rational religion to the myth of imposture”
Mario Biagioni specializes in the history of the Radical Reformation in the sixteenth century and its reception in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He recently published Viaggiatori dell ’ Utopia (Carocci, 2020) and Lelio e Fausto Sozzini, Le Explicationes giovannee (Ed. di Storia e Letteratura, 2020).
In the sixteenth century, religious rationalism laid the foundations of modern atheism. For example, a correspondence can be seen between Disputatio de incertitudine religionis Christianae (written around 1589) by the Socinian Christian Francken and certain themes in the anonymous work De tribus impostoribus , printed in Vienna in 1753. Both share common sources (Sextus Empiricus and Pomponazzi), affirm that religions are human inventions, and demonstrate the weakness of their foundations.
Keywords: Radical Reformation, imposture, atheism, religious rationalism, clandestine literature.
380Nicole Gengoux, “Atheism between logic and empiricism. The Theophrastus redivivusand Cyrano de Bergerac”
Nicole Gengoux specializes in seventeenth-century libertinism and atheism. She has written several articles and two books, Le Theophrastus redivivus , un athéisme philosophique [ … ] and Une lecture philosophique de Cyrano . She coedits the journal Libertinage et philosophie à l ’ époque classique ( xvi e –xvii e siècle) .
Taking two classic atheistic works, the Theophrastus redivivus and the novels of Cyrano de Bergerac, she shows that philosophical atheism is radically different from skepticism: empiricism and logic combine to demonstrate that while all knowledge is only probable, it is nevertheless certain that what eludes our senses, such as God the Creator, does not exist. Whether the physics draw on Aristotle or Descartes, the method used is one of timeless scientific rigor.
Keywords: Theophrastus redivivus , Cyrano de Bergerac, atheism, skepticism, science.
Myriam Bernier, “Does Bayle consider the virtuous atheist to have been graced?”
Myriam Bernier is a doctoral student in philosophy studying the question of the virtuous atheist. She has notably published “La réception de Pascal par les libertins”, Libertinage et philosophie , Classiques Garnier, 2018.
This article explores Bayle ’ s defense of the virtuous atheist, demonstrating that it appears to be underpinned by a paradox: on one hand, Bayle states that man only acts according to his passions; on the other, he affirms that true virtue must be defined as following what reason shows us to be good. However, according to Bayle this capability 381 only exists in the very rare cases of those who have obtained grace... Should we therefore conclude that the virtuous atheist has the gift of grace?
Keywords: atheism, virtue, libertinism, incredulity, irreligion.
Toleranzdebatten in der frühen Neuzeit (2016) et The Dutch Legacy : Radical Thinkers of the 17th Century and the Enlightenment (2017).
Winfried Schröder, “Clandestine atheist treatises in the historiography of atheism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries”
Winfried Schröder is professor of history of philosophy at the University of Marburg. He coedited Duldung religiöser Vielfalt – Sorge um die wahre Religion. Toleranzdebatten in der frühen Neuzeit (2016) and The Dutch Legacy: Radical Thinkers of the 17th Century and the Enlightenment (2017).
This article examines the numerous works first published in the seventeenth century that aimed to provide a history of atheism since its origins: not only do we discover the different conceptions of disbelief that existed, but also that several works belonging to the corpus of clandestine philosophical literature constitute the authors ’ intellectual background.
Keywords: Knutzen, Budde, Reimmann, Vœtius, Müller.
Writing and publishing atheism”
Sophie Audidière is a senior lecturer in philosophy at the University of Burgundy. Her work looks at the history of materialism, particularly Fontenelle ( Digression sur les Anciens et les Modernes et autres textes philosophiques , Garnier, 2016), Helvétius, and Diderot ( Passions de l ’ intérêt , Champion, 2022).
This article examines the differing status of atheism in some of La Mettrie ’ s work. Considered from the perspective of a “system of values,” atheism is not so much a thesis as a point of view external to ideology. At other times, it describes the possibility of a social world without God, which would maintain itself as well as any other, and perhaps also that of politics without God. Finally, it unambiguously sets out a philosophy of the living body as beginning and end.
Keywords: atheism, La Mettrie, natural law, materialism, politics.
383Paolo Quintili, “Atheism (un)veiled by the Encyclopédistes. D’Holbach, Spinoza, and some clandestine sources”
Paolo Quintili is professor of philosophy at Tor Vergata University of Rome. He has published, among other works, Matérialismes et Lumières. 1706–1789 (2009) and (with Giuseppina D ’ Antuono) Diderot en Italie. Avatars, masques, miroirs d ’ un philosophe (2019).
Based on an examination of its clandestine sources and the history of its publication and the editorial censorship it was subject to, this article analyzes how the deism of “natural religion” in the Encyclopédie (Volumes I to VI) developed into a more evident epistemological atheism (Volumes VII to XVII, 1765–1772), notably in the case of articles by Diderot and d ’ Holbach.
Keywords: atheism, Encyclopédie , Diderot, D ’ Holbach, clandestine literature.
Guillaume Coissard, “Dom Deschamps and the subversion of theology”
Guillaume Coissard is an FNRS research at the University of Brussels where he studies materialist philosophy, in particular eighteenth-century writers and their reevaluation. He has also written a thesis entitled “Lectures matérialistes de Leibniz au xviii e siècle.”
The enlightened atheism of Dom Deschamps is constructed, paradoxically, in opposition to atheists and in support of theology. Deschamps criticizes the atheism of the “semi-Enlightenment” for lacking a metaphysic that, on the contrary, he finds in theology. However, his interpretation of theology is based on a subversion that purifies 384 it to the point of entirely replacing it with a metaphysic that identifies God and nature. The article make a distinction between two types of subversion: heterodoxy and destruction.
Keywords: Deschamps, atheism, theology, metaphysics, the Enlightenment.
Il a publié All’ombra dei Lumi.
Mario Cosenza, “Religion and atheism in La Scienza della legislazioneby Gaetano Filangieri”
Mario Cosenza is a researcher at the Scuola Superiore Meridionale and the University of Naples Federico II where he studies Diderot, Rousseau, Marx, and Marcuse. He has published All ’ ombra dei Lumi. Jacques-André Naigeon philosophe (Napoli 2020) and Stato d ’ emergenza e dittatura (with Gianluca Giannini, Napoli 2022).
This article attempts to trace possible links between the ideas of Gaetano Filangieri (and his masterpiece, La Scienza della legislazione ) and eighteenth-century French philosophy, even in its clandestine forms. Although the Neapolitan philosopher– influential legal theorist, innovator, and also freemason–was not drawn to atheism and materialism, his legal theories are in keeping with the optimism of his era.
Keywords: Filangieri, science, law, atheism, legislazione .
Alain Mothu, “Atheism and its diffusion in the sixteenth century”
Alain Mothu (research engineer at Sorbonne University, CELLF 16–18) has published several works on the manifestations of religious disbelief and atheism, both ancient and modern, as well as on clandestine philosophical writing. His current research is principally focused on the Cymbalum mundi .
Atheism, whether considered as an attitude of indifference to divinity or as a rational (not systematic) rejection of it, did not fade as if by miracle in the Middle Ages. However, it was almost invisible in that period: it had not been conceptualized and philosophers and theologians did not take the phenomenon seriously. Only heresy was a source of concern. Everything was to change during the Renaissance and particularly the Reformation. Then the “atheists” would also then be perceived as a threatening collective entity.
Keywords: atheism, heresy, Renaissance, Reformation, politics.
Jean-Pierre Cavaillé, “Italian atheists in the conversations between Gabriel Naudé and Guy Patin”
Jean-Pierre Cavaillé teaches historical anthropology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He is the author of a number of works on “libertinage” and irreligion in the modern age, including Les Déniaisés.
Reading the Naudeana by Guy Patin provides a lot of information about those whom Naudé and Patin called the Italian “atheists.” Sometimes these are well-known authors (Pomponazzi, Vanini) but not always (Girolamo Borro, Giulio Castellani). Their description could appear to be excessive. However, everything changes once we know that, thanks to Mori, that Patin was the author of the Theophrastus redivivus, the composition of which probably involved contributions from Patin’s friends, including Naudé.
Keywords: atheism, libertinism, Naudé, Patin, Italy.
387Maria Teresa Bruno, “On a Heterodox collection from the Institut catholique de Lille (1.M.25) with ‘Champbonin’ origins”
Maria Teresa Bruno is the author of a philosophy thesis written under the joint supervision of the University of Salento and Sorbonne University (2021): “Former une logique par provision? Vincent Carraud and Gilles Olivo).
This article looks at a new collection (of a late period) of “clandestine manuscripts,” including some that were printed, and its author, Louis François Toussaint Du Raget de Champbonin, who was born in 1719 and died before 1792, and whose family were close to the Du Châtelet family and Voltaire in Cirey. The collection of the Champbonins ’ handwritten and printed texts, still relatively unknown, is the object of an initial reconstruction with a view to a more in-depth study, notably regarding the fragments of the individual texts.
Keywords: clandestine manuscript, collection, Champbonin, Voltaire, Du Châtelet.
