Spinoza writes that everyone should accept a list of fundamental truths, starting with the affirmation of ­God’s existence. These truths can be freely interpreted, he says, implying that atheists can agree that there is a God while thinking that by “God” they mean “the universe”. For some, however, that would mean lying. This article raises the question of whether anyone from the clandestine literature recognized this requirement of Spinoza and objected to the idea of implicitly lying.
