The clandestine authors that dealt with the theme of Jewish history basically had two models available: either the theory, previously used by the libertines, that focused on the image of legislators and on the doctrine of religion as a useful deception for controlling the people; or the Spinozist alternative that also offered a political interpretation of Jewish history without repeating some of the Judeophobic themes of the other tradition.
