The exceptional collection of documents on the clandestine book trade kept in Vire, comprising the papers of Thomas Pichon-Tyrrell, is still under-exploited. This reader, copyist and collector of subversive manuscripts amassed a considerable library, wherein clandestine literature had pride of place. His papers swarm with information about the circulation of books in Europe and accounts of his dealings with many booksellers, printers, and editors.
