The author seeks to understand how a personal question and requirement found expression in a system of thought integrating the idea of God, while Voltaire constantly expressed our inability to conceive His Being. The coherence of his whole thought is at stake. To describe Voltaire’s conception of God is to rediscover the logic of his doctrine, the meaning he lent to his moral and political positions and the sense he gave to the literary expression of his convictions.
