This article aims to show that the Cartesian triptych of metaphysical certainty - moral certainty - probability is very close to the Roman-Canonical theory of judicial proof, which has distinguished notoriety - full proof - semi-full proof since the Middle Ages. The author explains this by discussing the legal studies Descartes completed at the University of Poitiers.
