The story that is the object of this commentary was published by the Spanish novelist Ramón Pérez de Ayala (1880–1962) at the very start of his career. Its author demonstrates a good knowledge of the life and work of the Chinon-born writer during his time at the Fontenay-le-Comte monastery. One point in particular deserves to retain the attention of Rabelais specialists: the precise citation he makes of one of Theocritus’s “Idylls” known to be part of a collection which featured in a volume belonging to Rabelais.
