In the style of Rabelais Some lockdown observations on pastiches (Balzac, Gautier, Nodier)

Beyond inserting citations, the art of pastiche requires imitating a source text’s style or music, through phrasing that connotes rather than reproduces it. The lessons from a recent experience of writing pseudo-Rabelaisian pastiches, enlightened by syntactic analysis, are applied here to Balzac, Gautier, and Nodier and their respective efforts to recreate the Rabelaisian voice, its memorial trace, or the illocutionary force of the invective.
